Declan John: I'll try to get this PL legend tickets for Rangers clash v Celtic

Rangers defender Declan John has revealed Wales manager Ryan Giggs was quizzing him about the Old Firm on his way back from international duty – and revealed he was going to get the Premier League icon tickets for next month’s Hampden Scottish Cup semi-final between the sides.

Giggs called John into his first squad since replacing Chris Coleman as Wales manager and handed the left-back his first cap in four years in the 6-0 win over China.

John revealed the Premier League legend was “really interested” and admitted it was “tremendous” to have the manager show such interest.

“Funnily enough, when I was in the airport waiting for my flight back, the manager was asking me about Old Firm games,” John said, as quoted by the Daily Record.

“He was asking about tickets and dates, as he wants to come and watch one of them.

“It’s always good to have a manager who takes an interest and wants to come and see you play.

“He asked me about the last Old Firm game, how it went and what it was like to play in that atmosphere.

“The manager was really interested and I told him it was tremendous and I hadn’t experienced anything like it before.

“We have the two games coming up and I think I’ll try to get him tickets for the semi-final at Hampden.”

John has been a revelation since arriving at Ibrox from Cardiff City in August on loan before agreeing a permanent switch in January.

The Welshman has made 27 appearances for the Light Blues, scoring three times and contributing four assists, after coming into the side to replace Lee Wallace in September.

Football Insider verdict:

There’s always a big name or two in attendance at every Old Firm game – Steven Gerrard attended the most recent Ibrox clash – and Giggs’ interest will no doubt be a huge boost for John as he forces his way back into the international set up. It will surely give the player that bit more confidence knowing that his international boss is taking such a keen interest and wants to travel north and see the defender in action in one of the biggest games on the football calendar anywhere on the planet. If John does get Giggs tickets for next month’s semi-final at Hampden it should also give the 22-year-old extra reason to go out and impress ahead of the upcoming Nations League campaign.
