Derek Johnstone: Gerrard brings 'bucketloads' of this to Rangers
Rangers legend Derek Johnstone believes Steven Gerrard will bring “bucketloads” of experience to the Light Blues this season – and insists that “essential quality” is needed “more than anything” at Ibrox.
Gerrard kicked-off his reign in charge of the Ibrox giants by watching England’s Under-21s beat Qatar 4-0 in the Toulon Tournament – and Johnstone believes the 38-year-old will “instantly” get respect from the players.
After finishing third in the Scottish Premiership last season, Gers fans are hoping to avoid further disappointment again this campaign and Johnstone reckons the Liverpool icon won’t be shy in letting players know if they aren’t coming up to scratch.
“The thing that Rangers need in the dugout more than anything at the moment is real leadership, and Gerrard comes with bucketloads of that essential quality,” Johnstone said, as quoted by the Evening Times.
“He will instantly command respect from the players, and judging by what I have heard about the way he conducted himself in the Liverpool dressing room while captain at Anfield, he won’t be shy in letting people know exactly what he thinks.”

Johnstone is spot on that the Gers have lacked leadership for far too long and hopefully Gerrard can bring that to Ibrox as they try to bring an end to Celtic’s dominance of the Scottish game. After watching their side capitulate in each of the last two seasons, Gers fans are hoping the Liverpool legend can drag his side over the line and use the vast experience he gained from a glittering playing career to help secure the Light Blues’ first major trophy since 2011. Gerrard will need to find someone who can act as a leader on the pitch too as the player far too often look lost and have nobody in the side who is always driving them on and encouraging them to do better. Club captain Lee Wallace’s future hardly looks bright at Ibrox so appointing a new captain could end up being something Gerrard needs to do sooner rather than later.
