Dominic Calvert-Lewin: Pundit can't believe Newcastle could beat Arsenal to sign striker after source reveal

Noel Whelan has tipped Arsenal to beat Newcastle United to the signing of Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds forward insisted the only reason the 25-year-old would join the Magpies over the Gunners is for money.

A recruitment source told Football Insider last week (27 April) that Calvert-Lewin is likely to leave Everton this summer and that he has told friends he wants a move to Arsenal.

Newcastle are also interested in the England international as they look to continue spending following last year’s takeover.

However, Whelan admitted he could not see Calvert-Lewin joining Eddie Howe’s side over Arsenal.

“I think the only thing that would turn the player’s head to go to Newcastle, right now, would be wages,” Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“I don’t think Calvert-Lewin is putting that at the top of his must-haves.

“What Calvert-Lewin wants is a team where he feels he’s going to thrive. Playing with players that are going to give him the opportunity to score goals.

“It’s a very young and exciting side Arsenal are building. They’re going to be in European football, whether it’s Champions League or Europa League.

“The prospect of living in London too, these things do appeal to players. First and foremost, it’s got to be a footballing decision and right now, I think he’d choose Arsenal. I think most people would.

“Newcastle are probably about two years behind in terms of signings. If you look at the team, the way they’re playing and the players around you, you would choose Arsenal.

“That would benefit Calvert-Lewin more, I think he would thrive, I think it fits him. When I look at Calvert-Lewin at Arsenal, I go: Yes’.

“When I look at Newcastle, I think: ‘Hmm.’ It might be a similar situation to at Everton. I think he’d score more goals at Arsenal with the players around him.

“It’s young, it’s attacking. They’ve got a style of football that I do believe would suit Calvert-Lewin. When some managers and some players fit a football club, he fits Arsenal, in my opinion.”
