Dominic Solanke to Newcastle: Eddie Howe backed to land ‘perfect’ striker as Nick Woltemade replacement

Newcastle United should be moving quickly in the summer transfer window to sign Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke.

That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes Solanke would be a “big upgrade” on Nick Woltemade.

Woltemade is said to be unsettled on Tyneside, and the 24-year-old could return to Germany in the summer after only one season in the Premier League.

Newcastle will target a striker in the summer amid Woltemade and Yoane Wissa’s struggles to find the back of the net, with Solanke having proven to be a Premier League goalscorer.

Dominic Solanke a ‘perfect’ signing for Newcastle

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes movement could be “happening behind the scenes” between Newcastle and Spurs over a deal for Solanke.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks Eddie Howe would be able to get the best out of the 28-year-old.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Yes, I think he would. I think Eddie Howe would get the best out of him as he’s done before. I think he’s perfect for Newcastle.

“I think with the Woltemade situation, he seems to very unhappy right now. And I would say that Solanke would be a big upgrade compared to Woltemade. And I think working with Eddie Howe would be very good.

“And so, yes, I think that’s something that should be looking to happen as soon as possible for Newcastle. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was some deals happening behind the scenes right now. It hasn’t quite worked for Solanke who had a great start, but now he’s sort of tapered off slightly.

“And I think it would do him and Newcastle, the world of good. So I’d say from Newcastle’s point of view, definitely a thumbs up for Solanke.”

Newcastle face Malick Thiaw transfer interest

Wyness told Football Insider that Newcastle want to keep Malick Thiaw at St James’ Park, but the defender is gaining interest from a number of clubs.

Thiaw’s value is also expected to increase if the 24-year-old can force his way into Germany’s starting XI at this summer’s World Cup.

The German is one of Newcastle’s most valuable assets following an impressive first season in the Premier League, with Thiaw now a mainstay in Howe’s side.
