Don Hutchison staggered by ‘absolutely nuts’ Chelsea stat after what happened vs Burnley

Don Hutchison claimed that he was staggered by a stat that said Chelsea have had more red cards than they have had home wins this season.

The stat is not quite correct, but the reality is not much better. The Blues have had six red cards in the Premier League this season, and six wins at Stamford Bridge.

Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Burnley saw another moment of complete madness end in capitulation for Liam Rosenior’s side.

Chelsea had gone ahead in the fourth minute through Joao Pedro and looked to be cruising towards three points until Wesley Fofana, who had been shown a yellow card in the first half, decided to lunge to dispossess James Ward-Prowse.

The defender did not get the ball and instead sank his studs into the boot of the Burnley man, leaving the referee with no choice but to produce a red card.

Down to 10 men, the home side struggled to maintain their advantage and were undone in stoppage time when Zian Flemming headed home.

Don Hutchison in awe of ‘crazy’ Chelsea stat

It is not anything new to Chelsea fans this season to see the referee holding up a red card while their player trudges off the pitch.

In the Premier League alone, they have been reduced against Nottingham Forest, Man United, Brighton, Fulham, Arsenal and now Burnley.

Only at the City Ground did they hold on for the three points, losing three of the games and battling well against the Gunners.

But Saturday’s draw will certainly not go down as a point gained. Chelsea had not added to their advantage when Fofana was sent off, but they were certainly in control.

Even more maddening was the challenge itself, which took place deep into the Burnley half as the defender pressed high up with his teammates.

Speaking to ESPN on Saturday, Hutchison said: “I think I saw a ridiculous stat today that they’ve had more red cards than home wins this season, which is absolutely nuts. It’s crazy.”

The numbers behind Chelsea’s woeful home form

Boos rang around Stamford Bridge at full-time, with Chelsea having thrown away two points at home yet again this season.

After the game, Rosenior said the Blues had “set fire to four points from two home games”, and it is hard to disagree with him.

Chelsea gave up a two-goal lead to Leeds United last week, and there has been far more where that came from this season.

The London club have dropped a league-high 17 points from winning positions at home, also including games against Brighton, Sunderland, and Bournemouth.

Things felt very positive for Rosenior just a couple of weeks ago, but the problems are now mounting fast.
