Rangers have confirmed the signing of Burnley midfielder Scott Arfield on a four-year deal as the Canada international becomes the first recruit of Steven Gerrard’s reign as manager.
Arfield moves to Ibrox after making 193 appearances for the Clarets, with the Gers confirming that the paperwork had been finalised on his switch to Glasgow via their official Twitter account.

Gerrard revealed he was “delighted” to have secured the 29-year-old and revealed there will be “others” who will be coming in over the summer to strengthen the squad ahead of his first season in charge.
“I am delighted to have added Scott Arfield to the squad for next season. He is a talented and competitive midfielder who has competed at a high level in the English Premiership and internationally for Canada,” Gerrard said, as quoted by the Gers’ official website.
“It’s pleasing also that we have been able to start our rebuilding process so quickly after the end of the season. There is much more to be done of course as we look to build towards our Europa League campaign which will start in early July.
“Scott is the first one in and I look forward to working with him and the others who will be coming in to strengthen the squad.”
Football Insider verdict
Arfield is an exciting signing and is the perfect first name in the door as Steven Gerrard gets underway. The 29-year-old has plenty of experience at the top level and will bring some quality to the Gers midfield next season as they look to end Celtic’s recent dominance of the Scottish game. Getting defenders in now should be high on Gerrard and director of football Mark Allen’s shopping list with pre-season only a matter of weeks away. With eight-and-a-half weeks until the Gers are back in competitive action, it is going to be a long summer as they wait to finally see Gerrard’s side in action – and just who is in it. Whatever you want to say about’s Gerrard’s lack of experience as a manager, there’s a definite buzz around Ibrox as fans anticipate his arrival and wonder just what might be to come over the next few months. If the rest of Gerrard’s signings are of a similar quality to Arfield then the Light Blues could be in for a much more enjoyable season than the one just finished.
