Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has revealed that he wants to build an attacking team at Rangers – and admits the challenge for him to prove he can do that at a “top” club.
The Ibrox boss will take his first competitive game on July 12 with only a friendly against Bury before that, and Gers fans are intrigued by just how Gerrard’s side will shape up.
Gerrard also claimed he will demand “high standards” from his players as they look to overhaul bitter rivals Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership.
“I want to be an honest manager. I want to be honest with my players and demand high standards out of them,” Gerrard said, as quoted by the Evening Times.
“From the fans’ point of view, I want to create an attacking team that the fans enjoy watching. And also create a team that’s very difficult to beat.
“That’s easy to say but the challenge for me is can I go and create that, deliver that at a top football club.”
Football Insider verdict:
Gers fans are still a bit in the dark about quite how Gerrard’s side will line up tactically and whether there will be a revamp of the playing style. Although some clubs have a preference to play a particular way, the only thing that matters at Ibrox is that Rangers win. Everyone would love to watch beautiful attacking football every week but after waiting since 2011 for a major trophy, Gers fans would rather see their side celebrating at the end of the season. A big part of that comes down to the players’ mental strength more than their technical ability and it will be a huge test of Gerrard’s side. Bringing someone like Allan McGregor back to the club is the perfect example of that and the Gers making sure they have somone in the squad who has experience of lifting trophies in Scotland. The more you dig into some of the little things the Light Blues are doing, the harder it is not to be impressed.
