Eddie Howe: Newcastle manager’s ‘downfall’ is result of ‘turmoil’ behind the scenes

Eddie Howe remains backed by the Newcastle United support despite a difficult season at St James’ Park.

That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes Howe has struggled due to a “disastrous” summer transfer window.

Newcastle fans are not happy following their 2-1 defeat to local rivals Sunderland, and with the Magpies looking on course for a mid-table finish in the Premier League.

The club’s recruitment to replace striker Alexander Isak has failed, and no European football next season will leave question marks on the future of more stars this summer.

Howe is coming under more scrutiny at Newcastle, with the 48-year-old having been at the club since 2021.

Eddie Howe safe at Newcastle for now

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – thinks that the Newcastle fans still want Howe to be their manager.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness doesn’t believe the club will sack Howe during the international break.

Eddie Howe’s managerial record at Newcastle in all competitions.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I don’t sense that’s coming right now. I think Eddie has still recognised as probably the most successful manager in 70 years.

“Still, I think Eddie Howe has the support of the fans right now. I think they recognise that this downfall this season is a result of a disastrous transfer window last summer.

“The whole Alexander Isak issue. Nick Woltemade, Yoane Wissa being sort of last-minute decisions, the whole thing. There was also turmoil at the sporting director position. So, to me, it was all about last summer.”

Newcastle warned after earning financial boost

Former Man City financial advisor Stefan Borson told Football Insider that Newcastle will have a hole in their accounts next season due to failing to qualify for the Champions League.

It was revealed that the club earned £55.6million in prize money from their run to the knockout stages of the Champions League this season.

That money is not expected to have a significant impact on Newcastle’s finances, and Howe’s side need to continue qualifying for the competition to make it recurring revenue.
