Elliot Anderson’s stats and staggering pass completion rate vindicate one England selection Thomas Tuchel gets right
England slogged to an unconvincing 2-0 victory against Andorra in World Cup qualifying at Villa Park.
It was a turgid performance which saw England string long spells of possession together with no reward against a compact Andorra side.
England took the lead when Noni Madueke’s cross-come-shot deflected unfortunately off the head of Andorran centre-back Christian Garcia.
England, who struggled to create clear-cut chances finally found a second as Reece James whipped in a delightful cross that was met by the head of Declan Rice, to secure the Three Lions’ victory.

Elliot Anderson’s stats vindicate his England selection
Thomas Tuchel has faced plenty criticism over his squad selection since becoming England head coach less than a month ago.
However, his decision to start debutant Elliot Anderson in midfield proved to be a good one, as the Nottingham Forest midfielder earned the player of the match award according to Fotmob.
Anderson dictated England’s play at the base of Tuchel’s midfield, completing a staggering 107 passes in the match, with a completion percentage of 94%.
The Forest midfield also chipped in with four defensive contributions and 20 passes into the final third, proving he can be another all-action option for Tuchel in midfield.

Elliot Anderson proves why attention is warranted
Football Insider verdict
Anderson’s impressive performance is nothing new, with the Nottingham Forest midfielder reproducing the form he’s shown throughout recent months under Nuno Espirito Santo.
Fans at the City Ground will be used to his contributions at both ends of the pitch, and suggest Anderson is exactly the type of midfield the current England set up needs.
Elliot Anderson vs Andorra | |
Passes | 107/114 |
Passes into final 3rd | 20 |
Defensive contributions | 4 |
Long passes | 7/8 |
Duels | 7/14 |
While having a keen eye for a pass Anderson won’t force passes that aren’t there – indicated by his high pass completion percentage – a profile England need at the base of midfield.
As Tuchel looks to finalise his squad ahead of next summer’s World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States of America, Anderson will surely find his name in the squad if his standards continue at this level.
