Philips: Everton taking 'huge gamble' on Saint-Maximin after '£50m' update
Everton would be taking a “huge gamble” by spending £50million on Newcastle United star Allan Saint-Maximin.
That is according to ex-Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 24-year-old French winger.
The Mirror reported on 10th July, that the Toffees will launch a £50m bid for Saint-Maximin if they lose Richarlison to Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid.
Newcastle, however, are claimed to value the jewel in their crown at closer to £60m.
The former Nice wide man signed a contract extension last October that commits him to St. James’ Park until 2026.
The winger missed 17 matches last season across two separate spells on the sidelines with injury.

Phillips pointed to his inconsistency and injury record and insisted Everton would be playing a high-risk game spending such a large sum.
“I think that would be a huge gamble given his injury record,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.
“He’s not that consistent. He’s almost like Adama Traore. I’ve seen him play live on his day and he tore West Brom apart.
“But then you watch him the next week and you’re wondering if it’s the same player.
“He has a history of injuries and Everton have paid £50m for players over the years and it hasn’t worked out.
“So I’d be very surprised by their interest and very surprised if that was to happen, to be perfectly honest with you.”
Everton have set their sights on luring a ‘world-class’ right-winger to Goodison this summer, as revealed by this site on 10th May.
Saint-Maximin played on both flanks for Newcastle in 2020-21 as he netted three times and registered four assists in 25 league matches.
