Ex-Leeds star expects Wood to score 'tonnes' of goals for Newcastle after what he saw in training

Paddy Kenny has backed Chris Wood to score “tonnes” for Newcastle United.

The former Leeds United stopper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider,
spent time with the Magpies’ new striker while he was at Elland Road.

Newcastle confirmed the signing of Wood, 30, on Thursday (13 January) with Burnley confirming his release clause had been activated.

The New Zealand international has been registered in time to play against Watford on Saturday (15 January).

He could start the must-win game following a long-term injury blow for Callum Wilson.

Kenny has admitted he was always impressed with Wood when watching him train.

“Over his career his record is something like one goal every three games,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I was at Leeds with him for a little bit, he’s a genuine lad and he works nonstop.

“He’s a big target man and would put headers away for fun in training.

“If the delivery is right, he will score tonnes of goals for Newcastle. At Newcastle, it’s just about winning games.

“It won’t be pretty but if they just play it long to Wood they can be successful.

“He’s proved himself and I’m sure he’s buzzing to be at Newcastle, it’s a great club to score goals for, I’m sure.”

Wood has scored three goals for Burnley this season, who are level with Newcastle on 11 points.

The Magpies will move out of the relegation zone if they beat Watford.

In other news, Newcastle have been backed to follow Wood’s signing with the arrival of another striker after an update from a source.
