Ex-manager issues 'brilliant' Digne claim after 'ridiculous' £53m Aston Villa reveal
Alex McLeish has insisted leaving Everton for Aston Villa is a “brilliant move” for Lucas Digne.
However, the former Villa boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted it is “ridiculous” the £22million-plus transfer fee is a “good deal” in the modern market.
As revealed by Football Insider on Wednesday (12 January), Aston Villa have agreed a deal totalling £53million in transfer fees, add-ons and wages to sign Digne.
The Villans will pay an initial £22million, while the left-back has agreed a £120,000-a-week wage to join the Midlands outfit.
McLeish insisted the move would help Digne get his career back on track.
McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Digne wasn’t getting on under Benitez. He has to look after what he has left in his career. I know he’s still a young guy and he’s got a lot of time left.

“But he can’t waste any by staying at a club where he’s going to be fighting all the time and the manager’s shunned him.
“So he has to go and do what he showed everybody in the first couple years at Everton. It’s a brilliant move for him. He has to show and reward Aston Villa, Steven Gerrard and the fans for choosing him.
“It’s ridiculous, isn’t it, saying £22million is a good deal. It’s like not that much, is it?
“It gives the player a chance to resurrect his performance level again. Villa have heavily backed their manager’s over the last two or three years.
“It shows they still mean business and they want to be a huge part of this Premier League.”
Digne has not played for Everton since the 4-1 defeat to Liverpool at the start of December.
Villa’s current first-choice left-back is Matt Targett.
