Ex-manager makes 'out of the ordinary' Lamela claim as Tottenham in talks to sign 'diamond'
Alex McLeish has claimed Erik Lamela has never fulfilled his potential at Tottenham amid talks over a swap deal for Bryan Gil.
The former Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the “frustrating” 29-year-old could be a “diamond” on his day.
As revealed by Football Insider on Wednesday (July 21st), Tottenham are in negotiations with Sevilla over a part-exchange deal for Gil.
The Lilywhites have offered £21.6million plus Lamela to sign the 20-year-old Spain international.
McLeish insisted Lamela would be remembered for some special moments in a Spurs shirt.
However, he admitted the Argentina international did not deliver consistently enough for Tottenham.

“I think he’ll probably be remembered for the Rabona goal (v Arsenal),” McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.
“Everybody knows the guy’s got heaps of talent. When you say about his injuries and his inconsistency, he never quite made it to the level of the player we expected.
“He was one of the players that replaced Gareth Bale. There were four or five players, weren’t there, that came in when Bale left. It was to try and fill these gaps.
“I’m not saying he was that player but he certainly had the ability to do things out of the ordinary. That’s the frustrating thing for managers, when you think you’ve got a diamond and the diamond only shines now and again.
“It’s hard to have that consistency and make sure he is part of the nucleus of your team. That’s what you want. You buy players and you want them to be in the nucleus of your team. Gil could now be the diamond for them.”
Lamela has entered the final year of his contract at Spurs.
He has played 257 times and scored 37 goals for the Lilywhites.
