Ex-striker tells Leeds to swerve re-signing Nketiah for 'daft' fee that will leave fans fuming

Frank McAvennie has questioned why Leeds United would re-sign Eddie Nkeitah for £20million as he would only be backup for Patrick Bamford.

The former West Ham hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claims Whites fans also wouldn’t want Nketiah to return.

This site revealed on 5 June that Arsenal have offered the Yorkshire giants the chance to sign the 22-year-old permanently for a fee of around £20million.

Nketiah was a bit-part player at Arsenal last season and has just one year left on his contract.

He was loaned to Leeds for the 2019/20 campaign but returned to The Emirates in January after struggling for game time.

McAvennie insists any self-respecting player wouldn’t want to join Leeds as backup to Bamford.

“They would be paying £20million for a backup, that’s daft,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I’m not sure the fans would be happy with that. I know it’s nothing in football these days.

“But there have to be better players out there who can be bought and then start for them, for that price.

“Would he even want to go as a backup? My god, some of these players. If he’s not getting a game at Arsenal he must want to go and play.

“Unless his agent is pushing him and he’s going to get a fortune. Bamford is going to start every game if he’s fit.

“What kind of person would sign as a backup player when you know you won’t get the games.

“Why would you do that. Why go and sit on another club’s bench?”
