Ex-Tottenham mainstay must be banging on door to secure temporary exit for good of career
Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino will count himself incredibly lucky over the injury issues that the Lilywhites have suffered this season.
While there have been a number of notable absentees, with Toby Alderweireld’s long-term blow jumping out from the list, none of the missing men have really posed too much of an issue, with many having someone step up into their place and hit, or even exceed, the expected standards.
That certainly was the case when Harry Winks, then just a young academy graduate with a handful of appearances in the first team, was called up to play a regular role in the senior side earlier in the campaign.
The 22-year-old came in to replace Mousa Dembele, with Victor Wanyama also out injured, and he performed above and beyond in the middle of the park, showing a maturity and guile to his game which earned him a call up to the English national side.
However, injury put a hold on Winks’ own progression and he has not made a Premier League appearance in 2018 – something which will be bitterly disappointing considering his bright start to the season.

So what next for the young talent, after the good news that he has avoided the bombshell of surgery?
Well, it seems as though Spurs could well be bringing in another midfield star, reportedly leading the chase for Barcelona’s Andre Gomes – and his arrival would only push Winks deeper down the pecking order.
He definitely has a future at Spurs – that much is without question – but until the likes of Dembele, Wanyama and Eric Dier leave, a first team role is not guaranteed, and at his age, regular football is crucial to reach the top.
As such, this summer must see Winks demanding a temporary exit from north London, being handed the opportunity to go out and play regular football at a high level, building experience and becoming the best player possible.
If he stays, and remains in obscurity behind more established stars, his career will suffer badly for it.
