Tottenham are in the driving seat as they lead a transfer hunt over a handful of Italian sides for Barcelona’s midfield maestro Andre Gomes this summer, according to a report.
Italian football news outlet Calcio Mercato claim on their website that the Lilywhites have been handed a massive boost in their pursuit of the 24-year-old after he chose to appoint Paul Martin as his new agent, with previous representative Jorge Mendes said to have held close ties with Spurs’ rivals for Gomes’ signature, Serie A giants AC Milan and Juventus.
Martin reportedly already represents a number of talents in the Premier League, including John Stones and Ross Barkley, and it is believed his arrival to the situation sees Tottenham lead the charge for the Barca fringe star.
The 29-cap Portuguese midfielder has managed to make just 12 starts from 31 appearances across all competitions this season, with a sole assist to his name, with Barca on course to pick up the La Liga title as they currently top the table.
Football Insider verdict
It seems as though Gomes was not happy with the work that former agent Mendes was doing on his behalf, and a change in agents can often mean a change in clubs. Will that be from Barcelona to Tottenham this summer? Spurs have been heavily linked with the Portuguese star over the past 12 months and this change could be the catalyst they need to push on and snap up a deal. Still, what does it mean for the likes of Mousa Dembele, Eric Dier and Harry Winks, who will have another contender for a first team role? Gomes might be a tremendous talent, but whether Mauricio Pochettino needs him or not is another matter.
