Alfredo Morelos is unlikely to start for Rangers against Celtic with red-hot Kemar Roofe “the first name on the teamsheet”.
So says Alan Hutton, boyhood Rangers fan and former Ibrox right-back, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams ahead of the seismically important upcoming Old Firm derby.
Morelos, who is one of Rangers’ top earners on more than £30,000-a-week, marked his first start since returning from a two-match ban with a goal against St. Mirren on Wednesday.
But Roofe, also on the scoresheet in the 2-0 win, was pushed out to the left-wing in that match despite having enjoyed his best form this season playing through the centre or off the right.
Asked by Football Insider whether he though Morelos’s name would be on the teamsheet in light of this, Hutton said the decision is not a straightforward one for Steven Gerrard to make.
“For me, Kemar Roofe he looks like the main man. He’s the first name on the team sheet,” he said.
“It’s taken it a little bit of time for him to settle in but now we’re seeing the best of him. He looks like the player he was at Leeds. So I don’t see how you can move him about to bring Morelos in.
“We all know that he [Morelos] has not got the best goalscoring record against Celtic. But he gives you that fight and that hunger up front. Sometimes you need that.
“But it’s gonna be difficult for him to get back in. I’m not so sure if he’ll start.
Morelos’ goal at St. Mirren Park was his first Scottish Premiership strike in three months – Gerrard said to the BBC that his drought-ending goal had given him some “big decisions to make.”
But the manager will also be conscious of the fact that Celtic are something of a bogey team for the Colombian: he has failed to find then against them in 13 attempts.
