Everton defender Jonjoe Kenny needs a “fresh start” so he can start playing regular football, according to Danny Mills.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds and England defender delivered his verdict as the Merseysiders are in advanced talks with Burnley over a deal for the 23-year-old.
Football Insider revealed earlier this week an agreement between the two clubs is now “likely” as they explore various formulas.
Kenny has struggled for minutes this season despite first-choice right-back Seamus Coleman missing a significant amount of the season with an injury.
Carlo Ancelotti has instead turned to centre-back Mason Holgate to fill at right-back with Kenny limited to just one league start all season.
“Sometimes players need a fresh start,” Mills told Football Insider.
“For whatever reason, it doesn’t quite click.
“Sometimes it’s difficult to change the opinion of staff at the club if you’ve been there a long time and if you’re not getting the opportunity to show that then it’s even harder.
“You go a bit stale and you almost get overlooked at times.
“From a personal level, I’m sure he’ll be thinking ‘I need to get a move’ just to go and play football.”
Kenny spent last season on loan at Bundesliga side Schalke 04 where he scored twice and provided three assists in 34 games across all competitions.
He has played 48 times for Everton but the majority of those came in the 2017/18 season where he featured in 25 games.
In other news, a finance guru has shared a £45million Everton transfer claim.
