Kevin Phillips has claimed Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s position at Everton is under threat from the potential signing of Alfredo Morelos this summer.
The former Sunderland and Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, feared the arrival of the 24-year-old from Rangers could “backfire” due to the player’s temperament.
Football Insider revealed that Everton are firmly interested in Morelos and plan to make a move when the transfer window opens.
A fee of just £12million could be enough to tempt the Gers into selling their star striker due to the financial impact of the coronavirus.
Carlo Ancelotti already has Richarlison, Calvert-Lewin and Moise Kean who can play as central strikers but all three were ineffective in a 3-0 loss to Wolves on Sunday.
When asked by Football Insider if there was room for Morelos at Goodison Park, Phillips said:
“Dominic Calvert-Lewin has gone off the boil a little bit and Richarlison can play out wide. You would not call him an out and out front man.
“Morelos would come down and challenge Calvert-Lewin.
“It is always a slight gamble when he will be up against better defenders in the Premier League and his temperament could cost them, it has certainly cost Rangers at times this season. The transfer could backfire.
“It is hard to judge but he certainly knows where the back of the net is and Everton are looking for a goalscorer.”
Morelos scored 29 goals in 46 appearances for Steven Gerrard’s side last season.
The transfer window will likely open at the end of July and close in early October after the matter was discussed at a Premier League shareholders’ meeting last week.
