Exclusive: Top pundit ‘Surprised’ big name hasn’t joined Newcastle after talks collapse

Michael Brown admits he is surprised Tottenham defender Danny Rose did not seal a permanent move after his loan spell at Newcastle United.

The former Spurs midfielder, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes there will be plenty of interest in the left-back despite negotiations with Genoa going cold.

As revealed by Football Insider, talks between Spurs and the Italian side have collapsed as the Lilywhites look to either loan or sell the 30-year-old for the season.

It is understood Tottenham have set a £5million asking price on Rose but are open to a temporary deal after struggling to build interest in a permanent exit.

This site revealed in August that Newcastle, who took the defender on loan for the second half of last season, cooled their interest and have since signed Jamal Lewis from Norwich.

Brown admits he expected Steve Bruce’s side to make a move after his temporary stay but suggests there will still be a club out there for him.

Brown told Football Insider: “Well it’s just up in the air at the moment, he went out to Newcastle and I’m not sure why that wasn’t furthered – they were in the market for a left-back as we know.

“Danny Rose, he’s been at Spurs, he’s been at Newcastle, I thought he would join Newcastle – there’ll be clubs that want to take Danny Rose, that’s for sure.

“I was surprised there wasn’t more firmed up attention around him going to Newcastle but he’s a good player, he just needs to get playing and hopefully he finds somewhere soon.”

Rose played 13 times for Newcastle during his loan spell at St James’ Park.

He has a total of 214 appearances under his belt for Tottenham as well as 29 caps for England.
