Noel Whelan has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur must go all out to keep “superstar” talent Harry Kane this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds United hitman suggested that losing their talismanic captain would leave Spurs with a “huge void” to fill next term.

Respected Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo have reported that Real Madrid are eager to lure the 26-year-old away from North London at the end of the season, and could even be willing to offer Gareth Bale as a makeweight in any potential deal.

But even with the Wales international included in the deal, Whelan does not believe that Spurs can afford to let their star man leave.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “They’ve got to try and show some purpose to keep him [Kane].

“He’s the one of the best strikers in the world, and I think the fans would want Spurs to do all they can to keep him, because he’s integral.

“He’s their captain, he’s their leader, he’s their goalscorer, and you can’t replace a Harry Kane. What do you go and get in place of him? That is the problem – there would be a huge void left if he does leave.

“Would it be tempting for Kane? Of course it would – who wouldn’t want to go and play for Real Madrid? He wants to win things, and he’s definitely going to do that if he goes to Real Madrid.

“Everybody needs a superstar, and he definitely is one of those players.”

Kane has been sidelined with a hamstring complaint since the beginning of January, and was only due to return to action this month.

Despite his injury issues, however, the England skipper has hit 17 goals in 25 appearances this term.
