Whelan Exclusive: It's 'Definitely' time for in-demand midfielder to quit Leeds

Noel Whelan has claimed that it is “definitely” time for Eunan O’Kane to quit Leeds United.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Elland Road forward suggested that there was no longer a place for the 29-year-old at his former club, and that it was time for him to look elsewhere for a fresh start.

As revealed by Football Insider earlier this month, it is expected that the Republic of Ireland international will be sold before the end of the current transfer window, with several lower league sides said to be interested in him.

O’Kane suffered a double leg break while on loan at Luton Town in 2018, and has not played for his parent club since.

When asked whether it was time for the midfielder to leave Elland Road on a permanent deal, Whelan told Football Insider: “Oh yeah, it’s definitely time for him. I think he’d be the first to tell you that.

“There’s no place at Leeds United for Eunan.

“Yeah, horrific injury – he was out on loan anyway which goes to show that he wasn’t wanted when Marcelo Bielsa came in and is surplus to requirements in the squad that he wanted to use throughout the Championship campaign.

“Now he’s fit it’s time for him to look elsewhere, continue his career, get back to playing football and progress somewhere else.

“It won’t be at Leeds United. As a player you want to get out of the club very, very quickly because you want to get back to playing football. It’s best for both parties.”

O’Kane has racked up 58 appearances for Leeds during his time at the club, but has never found the back of the net for United.

He returned to fitness earlier in the season, but has failed to even make a match day squad for Marcelo Bielsa’s men so far this term.
