Father of reported Newcastle striker target drops major transfer hint on Twitter
By Harvey Byrne
Newcastle are reportedly eyeing Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez, and over the weekend his father dropped a major hint that he will be on the move this summer.
The Daily Mail reported on 24 April that Rafa Benitez is keen to sign the 27-year-old forward who is struggling for game time at the south coast club.
Rodriguez was however handed a rare start for Southampton as they travelled to Middlesbrough on Saturday and he found himself on the score sheet with the opener in his side’s 2-1 victory.
But, despite his goal scoring display some sections of the Saints’ fan base still weren’t impressed with his overall performance and one fan wrote on Twitter that the striker was finished and that he will exit Claude Puel’s side this summer.
Rob, Jay Rodriguez is finished mate. Unfortunately his career will be remembered for that awful injury.. He will exit Saints this summer.

This then led to his dad, Kiko Rodriguez sticking up for his son via his personal Twitter account with a reply stating “you might be right on one of comments”.

Well said Terence you might be right on one of comments.

Now, it was unlikely that Rodriguez believes that the Southampton fan was correct with his “finished” comment, meaning that the one-time capped England international could be on the move this summer.
Newcastle will be on the hunt for proven Premier League players this window and with a return of 26 goals and 13 assists in 103 top-flight outings Benitez may be keen to bring in Rodriguez if he is available.
Football Insider verdict:
With goalscorers Manolo Gabbiadini and Charlie Austin at Southampton it is unlikely that Rodriguez will remain at the club past the summer due Puel’s one upfront formation. The forward will also be keen to go out and gain some more playing time after an injury has significantly damaged what once looked like a promising career. Now, Rodriguez still hasn’t shown that he will be a consistent goal scorer in England’s top-flight since his injury, but he could certainly add to a Magpies forward line so far containing Dwight Gayle, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Daryl Murphy.
In other Newcastle transfer news, Benitez is also plotting a swoop for this Serie A goal machine.
