Former Rangers and Blackburn star Barry Ferguson has claimed that Jermain Defoe could move to Rangers this summer because of Steven Gerrard and the promise of lifting silverware.
Talking in the Daily Record, Ferguson made a convincing claim as to why the striker might make a sensational move to Ibrox.
“If Defoe is on £85k at Bournemouth then Rangers can’t possibly compete with that. But there’s something my old club can offer that no amount of money can buy.
“Trust me on this, there is no way to put a price on what it feels like to lift a trophy and have a medal hung around your neck.
“Defoe is a prime example. He’s had a wonderful career but has never known the joy of holding silverware above his head. As a 35-year-old at a club like Bournemouth, let’s just say his time is running out.
“If Gerrard can offer him this chance to end his career with a bang then maybe Defoe will reach the conclusion money can’t buy him the happiness he might find in Glasgow. Maybe that thought will entice him to make the move.”
Football Insider verdict:
Ferguson makes a good point. Defoe has had a brilliant career but it’s never reached the heights that he might have hoped. Defoe was always on the second tier of British strikers, with a record that suggested he should have been promoted up. At 35-years-old he’s not going to get a chance at a decent Premier League club – his last season at Bournemouth has proved that. However, we’ve got absolutely no doubt that he would monster the Premiership for at least another two years. There’s a real feeling that something is happening at Ibrox with Steven Gerrard in charge and Defoe might just fancy being a part of that. How much money do you need? That’s the real question. In today’s world, wealth creation and accumulation might be seen as the be all and end all, but Defoe will still still have a competitive itch that he needs to scratch and, as Ferguson says, he’s probably got more money than he can spend. Gerrard can offer him something that money can’t buy. Will it happen? Probably not, but where there’s a chance…
