Gelhardt & Greenwood are not the answer to Leeds striker problem - Whelan
Noel Whelan insists youngsters Sam Greenwood and Joe Gelhardt are not the answer to the Leeds United striker problem.
The former Leeds forward, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed his old side need to find a proven striker with experience this summer.
Patrick Bamford has started every Premier League game for Marcelo Bielsa’s side this season and summer signing Rodrigo has been mainly deployed in an attacking midfield role despite spending the majority of his career up front.
Gelhardt has made the bench in Leeds’ last two Premier League outings but he is yet to be handed his senior debut by Bielsa.
Greenwood is yet to make the Premier League squad but did feature in the 3-0 FA Cup loss to Crawley however Whelan doesn’t believe either player is the Bamford backup Leeds need.
Whelan told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, “We need strikers, there’s no doubt about that.

“We’ve got some young lads coming through, Sam Greenwood, Joe Gelhardt. But I do think Leeds need a bit more experience.
“Someone who is a bit more like-for-like with Bamford. Greenwood and Gelhardt are not that ‘Bamford style’ player.
“We need to think long and hard about who we’re going in for. We know Bielsa is very choosy about who he brings in and it will always be his decision.
“Young, promising players are always on the cards for Leeds, Raphinha is the prime example out of the signings we’ve made this season.”
Gelhardt has had an impressive Premier League 2 campaign this season scoring seven goals and picking up two assists in 12 outings.
Greenwood has also had a good season with the Leeds U23s with the striker picking up six goals in 11 Premier League 2 appearances.
