Belgian club Gent have tabled a contract offer to Milad Mohammadi as they look to beat Celtic to his signature this summer, Football Insider understands.
The Hoops have set their sights on the left-back, 25, with Football Insider revealing over the weekend that he has been lined up as a potential successor to Kieran Tierney.
A source close to the situation has told Football Insider that Gent have made the first move in the race for the capture of Mohammadi by offering him a long-term contract.
Mohammadi is a player in demand as he is available on a free transfer after ending his spell at Russian club Akhmat Grozy, where his deal expires at the end of this month.
A Celtic source has told Football Insider that the club believe the 25-year-old could fill the left-back slot next season amid the growing possibility Kieran Tierney is heading for the exit door.
Celtic have rejected an opening £15million cash-plus-player bid from Arsenal, but the Premier League club are set to return to the negotiating table in the coming days with an offer the Scottish club “can’t refuse”.
Mohammadi has extensive club and international experience, playing in last summer’s World Cup for Iran and then ending his third campaign at Akhmat Grozy with 28 league appearances.
Hoops manager Neil Lennon is looking for at least one, and possibly two, new left-backs this summer as he aims to build a squad capable of maintaining their domestic dominance as well as make an impact in Europe.
The northern Irishman has given the green light for the club to seal the capture of Mohammadi.
In other Celtic news, it can be REVEALED that one of the club’s Scottish players has agreed terms with club giants as he’s set for sensational transfer.
