Gerrard: Reported Liverpool target would be a big piece of the jigsaw

Steven Gerrard believes that heavily linked Liverpool target Vigril van Dijk would be a great fit at Anfield next season.
Southampton’s 25-year-old has emerged as one of the best defenders in the Premier League and Reds icon Gerrard has welcomed a move for him.
Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol revealed on Monday that the centre-back wants to join the Merseyside club after being impressed by the efforts to sign him from manager Jurgen Klopp.
Meanwhile, Ladbrokes claimed on their official website that Liverpool were prepared to offer Van Dijk a £200,000-a-week deal, while Southampton were holding out for £60million for his signature.
Gerrard has backed a move for the Southampton ace this summer and feels he is a “piece of the jigsaw” that the side need.

“I’d love to see him [Van Dijk] in a red shirt,” Gerrard said, as quoted by the Daily Mail. “I’m a huge fan. I thought he was fantastic at Celtic and I thought we should have had a go for him back then.
“It will cost us a few more quid but I think he is a piece of the jigsaw that would be very welcome and very big for this team.”
Liverpool currently have the likes of Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip, Ragnar Klavan and Joe Gomez competing for the centre-back positions.
However, the Reds defence has been a major concern at the club during the past few seasons and it’s widely believed they need a new leader in their backline.
The Reds have secured Champions League football for next season after their fourth-placed league finish and that can often be a major attraction for players.
Van Dijk would be expected to go straight into the Liverpool starting XI and has proved his class in recent years with the Saints.
The powerful centre-back is physically demanding in the air and very accomplished in possession.
In other Liverpool transfer news, they are eyeing a 26-year-old defender from Serie A.
