'Got a spare £20m?', 'In your dreams' - Celtic fans react to reported PL interest in 22-year-old

By Will Butcher

Celtic fans have laughed off interest in Jozo Simunovic on Twitter after it was reported that Newcastle were looking to sign the defender.

The Scottish Sun claim Rafa Benitez is eyeing the centre-back, with £9million said to be enough to complete a deal that would see the 22-year-old move south of the border.

Forming a partnership at the heart of Celtic’s defence with Belgium international Dedryck Boyata, Simunovic has shined in Brendan Rodgers’ side this season.

Making 31 appearances in all competitions for the 48-time Scottish champions this term, Simunovic has helped the Hoops keep a huge 17 clean sheets while in the starting eleven.

His consistency at the back has given Celtic the foundation to go one and dominate Scottish football, which has seen them already hold aloft the Scottish League Cup and League title.

Celtic fans reacted to the reported interest of newly-promoted Newcastle in blunt fashion, disregarding it as speculation and suggesting the Toon would have to cough up a lot more than £9million.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Simunovic has a contract at Celtic Park for another three years until May 2020, but almost signed for Serie A side Torino last summer.

In other Celtic transfer news, Everton are plotting an £8million move this midfielder.
