Heckingbottom responds hilariously to comments he made about hating Leeds
New Leeds manager Paul Heckingbottom has responded hilariously to accusations that he used to “hate” leeds when he was growing up, saying “Leeds fans used to kick lumps out of us”.
Heckingbottom took over from the sacked Thomas Christiansen on Tuesday and was talking in his first pre-match press conference today.
He had previously told the Yorkshire Evening Post, as quoted by HITC, that “We hated Leeds and they hated us and that is how it was.
“You understand the support they have got and the size of the club and the tradition as it was always rammed down your throat with them bragging about it.
“It is a team everyone loves to hate, but a big club with a big tradition. It is a big derby for us.”
Asked about these comments at his press conference, as quoted by Leeds Live, Heckingbottom simply said, “I am from Royston and you were a Leeds fan or a Barnsley fan.
“Leeds fans used to kick lumps out of us.”
If he can turn around the Leeds season, the fans that used to kick lumps out of him might declare him their new hero.
This season started off in the best possible way under Thomas Christiansen as he took his new side to the top of the Championship.
However, since those heady, early, days it’s all gone sour and Christiansen was sacked on Sunday after a run of games that sees leeds without a win since December.
Heckingbottom’s first game in charge is away at Sheffield United, a promotion rival, and he’ll be desperate to get his first points as manager on the board.
The game is in front of the Sky TV cameras which will give the world a chance to see the reaction that he gets from the Leeds supporters.
