Celtic legend Pat Bonner has said that striker Moussa Dembele has to pull his finger out and start scoring more goals.
After a stellar season last campaign, Dembele has had a stuttering season, scoring just eight goals in 23 games.
And the top scorers for Celtic are just one goal ahead, with both Scott Sinclair and Leigh Griffiths scoring just nine.
Bonner is gobsmacked by that statistic and said that it must be the first time that’s ever happened to a Celtic title-winning side.
And the tough talking Bonner has said that injuries are no excuse, ahead of the huge Scottish Cup clash against Rangers, although he says Dembele will hit back in the huge Scottish Cup clash.
Talking in the Scottish Sun, Bonner said: “Injuries can affect players but Henrik and Charlie both came back from broken legs and produced the goods again.
“Moussa Dembele is a young man with brilliant attributes. For me, though, he has to do it more often.
“I’ve no doubt that he’ll go out on Sunday and he’ll show his quality again. But I want to see him doing that on a regular basis.
“When I look at the goalscoring charts and the top Celtic scorer has nine goals in the league, I question that. How is that happening?
“Griffiths and Dembele have had spells out but even at that, it still shouldn’t be happening.”
Football Insider verdict:
Scoring goals from lots of different positions is a great thing and staple for any title-winning side. But Bonner is right, it’s almost unfathomable that the top scorer for Celtic in the league this season has just nine goals. And Dembele scoring just eight in 23 games is poor by his standards. Dembele was linked with lots of clubs last season but it’s testament to the fact that his stock has dropped that there are far fewer rumours linking with the Frenchmen with a move away this summer. If you want to be brilliant you have to produce consistently – and not just in the big games. Dembele should get the start tomorrow and he must prove himself, not just in Sunday’s games, but for the rest of the season.
