How Steven Gerrard feels about potential Rangers return
Russell Martin is fighting to save his job at Rangers amid growing calls for his head following a terrible start to the season so far.
Despite having won two of their last three games, Martin‘s position remains under threat as Rangers remain eighth in the league, nine points shy of league leaders Hearts.
Immediately following the late winner in the 2-1 win against Livingston, Rangers fans renewed chants for Martin to be sacked, with wins not enough to win them over.
Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed on 21 September that Rangers have begun assessing alternatives to Martin with a number of candidates believed to be keen on the position.
Ibrox legend Ally McCoist has tipped Steven Gerrard to return to Rangers, and make a clear impact, labelling him “tremendous” and insisting he would be welcome back.

Steven Gerrard to accept Rangers return with financial backing
Gerrard is believed to be open to a return to Ibrox, having been out of the job since leaving Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Ettifaq in January.
That is according to former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the former Aston Villa boss would expect to be backed financially.
This comes after Brown told Football Insider on 30 September that Gerrard is a contender to replace Martin at Rangers after also being considered during the summer.
“Gerrard is always going to be one Rangers look at,” he told Football Insider.
“I think he’s exactly the type of manager they need, because he’s somebody who the fans and the players can get behind and somebody who is going to push them forward.
“He knows the club, knows the people, knows the fanbase, and he’d be able to go in there and immediately get everybody pulling in the same direction.
“I hear he would welcome the chance to go back to Rangers, but I expect he will want assurances that he will be backed financially.

“At the end of the day, you can point the finger at the manager or whoever, but that squad is not good enough to compete with Celtic.
“Gerrard has good connections in the game and players want to play under him, we saw that in his first stint there, so he’ll want to bring in some of these players.
“If he comes in at Rangers a bit closer to the window, he will expect to be allowed to strengthen the squad, because if not he might struggle to turn things around.”
While 49ers Enterprises are not expected to be influenced by outside noise, alternative options are being considered, and Gerrard has been widely backed for the job.
Russell Martin sack plan emerges at Ibrox
Football Insider revealed on 26 September that Martin is edging closer to the sack after a string of underwhelming results since his appointment.
Sources said the boss had been given four games to save his job at Ibrox and was expected to win all four, before falling at the first hurdle against Genk.
A win against Livingston eased the concerns behind the scenes, but clashes with Sturm Graz and Falkirk could now prove pivotal to his future.

The boss has won just five of his 15 games in charge across all competitions, leading to calls for his dismissal both inside and outside of Ibrox.
As a result, Football Insider revealed Rangers could be forced to sack Martin with ongoing protests amongst the supporters putting pressure on the board.
