Hutton Exclusive: Rangers man will be at the club for years after English-club swoop

Alan Hutton believes that Rangers manager Steven Gerrard would consider a move to a club like Leeds United were they to make an approach for his services.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Gers and Scotland defender suggests the Liverpool legend would not be “daft” enough to turn his nose up at a move to a big club in England.

As revealed by Football Insider last week, Birmingham made an approach to make Gerrard their next manager, although the Gers boss swiftly turned down their advances.

However, Hutton believes that while Gerrard is committed to his job at Ibrox, he would have taken the time to consider a move to a top Championship or a Premier League club.

Asked what the boss’ reaction would have been had it been a team like Leeds United making the move, Hutton told Football Insider: “I think you always have to think about it, you’re not daft and he definitely won’t be daft.

“You’ve always got to think of the situation that the club’s in and he’s obviously got aspirations and dreams to manage at a high level.

“If there was a top Championship team, or a Premier League team, I think he would have a think about it but at the moment in time, he’s very into was he’s doing and that’s building something at Rangers.

“He’s building a young, hungry team to go forward and compete against Celtic and that’s his main aim at the moment. I don’t think it would look great if he jumped ship early doors, I think he’s here for the next few years and he wants to do something special with Rangers.”

Gerrard has been at Ibrox for two years now, having left his position as manager of the Liverpool under-18s.

The Gers finished 13 points adrift of Celtic after the Premiership season was cut short this year, although they are still in the Europa League at the round of 16 stage.

In other Rangers news, a journalist has waxed lyrical to Football Insider as the club finalise “outstanding” new signing.
