‘I have to say’ – Matt Le Tissier has already told Rangers who should replace Russell Martin
Rangers’ 1-1 draw with Falkirk was the final straw for 49ers Enterprises as the board finally sacked Russell Martin at Ibrox.
Danny Rohl has been linked to Rangers in the aftermath of Martin’s sacking after the German was a firm favourite to take the job alongside the 39-year-old in the summer.
Martin became the shortest-serving Rangers boss ever after spending just 123 days at the club, 76 days less than the next closest manager to him.
Rangers’ 1-1 draw away at Falkirk came a week after they had struggled at fellow promoted side Livingston, and two losses in two games in the Europa League to Genk and Sturm Graz all but confirmed Martin’s exit.

Matt Le Tissier pinpoints Steven Gerrard as firm favourite
Alongside Rohl, numerous other names have been circulating for the vacant managerial position at Rangers, with Steven Gerrard the name most heavily linked to the job.
Gerrard has been out of work since January 2025 after leaving Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia, and the legendary Rangers head coach could be set for a remarkable return.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Southampton star Matt Le Tissier discussed Martin’s exit and his potential successor.
Le Tissier said: “Russell Martin’s time at Rangers came to a very abrupt end. I don’t think it was a huge surprise given the way the fanbase were feeling about Russell, and it’s going to be really interesting now who they go for as a replacement.
“I’ve seen that Steven Gerrard is the favourite with the bookies at the moment, and I have to say it’s the appointment that probably makes the most amount of sense, given what he did there and how they feel about him. I think it’s the logical appointment to make.”
Matt Le Tissier hints at possible Sean Dyche appointment if Steven Gerrard isn’t in the frame
Rumours have swirled that suggest Gerrard wouldn’t be best placed to take the Rangers job until January 2026, due to financial reasons, leaving the door ajar for other candidates to slip in.
Le Tissier went on to say: “There are obviously other people in the frame, I think [Sean] Dyche could go up there and stabilise the club a little bit.
“I’ve also heard [Mark] Van Bommel mentioned in dispatches as well, but I feel like it’s going to be Steven Gerrard.”
Rangers’ next five fixtures | Competition |
Rangers vs Dundee United | Scottish Premiership |
Brann vs Rangers | Europa League |
Rangers vs Kilmarnock | Scottish Premiership |
Hibernian vs Rangers | Scottish Premiership |
Celtic vs Rangers | Scottish League Cup |
As Rangers sit in eighth place in the Scottish Premiership with eight points, it will take a miracle for whoever the new appointment is to salvage Rangers’ season.
The way the tide is turning, Gerrard may be the only plausible option as the toxic mood Martin left behind at Ibrox won’t be easier to turn around.
