Rangers news: McNamara reacts to Gers making move for Campbell

Ibrox Exclusive: McNamara suggests Rangers have timed bid for attacker to perfection

Jackie McNamara suggested that Rangers have timed their move for Stoke City attacker Tyrese Campbell to perfection.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the former Scotland international pointed out the Gers’ move had come at a good time as Campbell is starting to do well.

Football Insider recently revealed that the Gers have submitted a new offer for Campbell with them trying to tie him down to a pre-contract agreement.

Steven Gerrard’s side are keen on signing Campbell this month or in the summer once his current contract with Stoke City expires.

McNamara explained that the Gers have timed their move to perfection as his recent form could see him hit the ground running if he arrives in January, but also noted other teams might start to become interested in him.

When asked if Rangers have submitted their bid for Campbell at the perfect time as his form has improved which means he could hit the ground running upon potentially arriving and because his form will attract others, McNamara told Football Insider: “Yeah and now it’s all about opportunities.

“What opportunities will he have? He’s started to do well and maybe Rangers are right to try to buy him.

“But will he come in and start straight away? That’s the question.

“But both Rangers and Celtic are gearing up for the next part of the season so it’s crucial who they bring in and let go.”

The 20-year-old has scored five goals in his last four league outings for Stoke, including the goal that saw the Potters get a surprise 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion on Monday.

Campbell has played a total of 24 times across all competitions for the Gers this season, racking up nine goals and two assists in the process.
