Tam McManus: Celtic needed this £5m-rated player to unlock Dundee defence

BBC pundit Tam McManus has claimed that Hibernian’s John McGinn would have helped Celtic overcome Dundee in a game which ended goalless on Wednesday night.

McGinn made the claim about the 23-year-old on his personal Twitter account, as the Hoops struggled to create many chances against the Dens Park side.

“Celtic still drawing 0-0 with Dundee? If only they had a John McGinn type player to unlock packed defences” he said.

£5million-rated McGinn is having a very good season for a Hibernian team which is pushing for a top three finish only a season after gaining promotion to the Scottish Premiership.

The player has recently become a regular in the Scotland set-up, and was linked with a move to the Hoops, as reported by the Daily Mail, in January.

The Bhoys will no doubt be amongst a host of clubs linked to the player in the summer when the transfer window reopens.

Football Insider verdict

McManus might have been slightly tongue in cheek here, but the fact remains that McGinn will once again be the subject of lots of speculation linking him with a move to the Hoops in the summer. The big question that has to be answered is is he good enough to get into the Hoops side at the moment – and the answer would have to be ‘no’ at this moment in time. He is nowhere near the quality of Scott Brown yet, and arguably Olivier Ntcham is a better, and indeed younger player than McGinn. Only time will tell but at this moment in time McGinn isn’t yet the man to drive the Hoops forward in the future.
