Irvine: This ‘incredibly talented’ Rangers target would be huge coup for Gerrard

Former Celtic midfielder Jackson Irvine has raved about the potential Rangers signing of Liverpool youngster Harry Wilson.

The 25-year-old Hull midfielder played with Wilson in the Championship, after the 21-year-old winger spent the second half of last season there on loan.

And he thinks he would be an incredible signing for Rangers – something he is keen avoid as a Celtic fan.

Talking in the Daily Record, Jackson said: “As a Celtic fan, I’ll be devastated if Harry goes to Rangers. This kid is incredibly talented.

“He’s not lightning quick but he has an ability just to glide past players. And he’s terrific in the final third.

“If Rangers get him they’ll be doing well because they’ll have had to fight clubs in England. He has so much potential and if Rangers get him it’ll be a real coup.”

Football Insider verdict:

One of the reasons Gerrard’s appointment at Rangers is so exciting is his link with Liverpool and everyone is expecting a couple of youngsters to arrive on loan. Jackson says it will be a real coup if Gerrard lands him, and he thinks he’s going to have a fight on his hands, but the move makes a lot of sense. Wilson isn’t ready for the first team at Liverpool yet and impressed with Hull last season. However, no disrespect to Hull, but playing at Rangers would be a step up for the youngster. Ibrox is going to be a sellout every week and that means he’ll be playing in front of 40k+ fans in an incredible atmosphere. He’ll get to play in some incredible Old Firm derbies, he’ll continue to develop under a manager that knows him well, and could get a run-out in the Europa League if Rangers can go one better than last season and navigate the qualifiers.
