Liverpool legend Rafa Benitez thinks taking over as manager at Rangers would be a “positive” for Steven Gerrard after reports claimed the former Anfield captain was the Ibrox giants’ top pick to replace Graeme Murty in the summer.
According to the BBC, Gerrard is the “frontrunner” for the Ibrox hotseat and Benitez thinks moving to Ibrox is a great opportunity for Gerrard to hone his skills as a manager before an eventual return to Anfield.
The Liverpool Under-18s coach has only just started his coaching career but could be thrown in to the Glasgow goldfish bowl as the Light Blues try to stop bitter rivals Celtic from securing an eighth successive Scottish Premiership title.
Benitez thinks the Ibrox job would be ideal for Gerrard to “see the problems” managers have to face and insists it would be a step in the right direction for him.
“I’m sure he would like to coach, to manage Liverpool in the future, but because he has this chance now, he has an opportunity to go to another place and learn and see the problems you have as a manager,” Benitez said, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo.
“I’m sure it will be positive for him.”
If Gerrard does take over at Ibrox it would see him go head-to-head with his former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers as well as working with a player once tagged as the “new Steven Gerrard” by Robbie Fowler, 21-year-old midfielder Jordan Rossiter.
Any announcement likely won’t come until after the final game of the season for the Gers, with Murty taking charge until the summer after stepping up following Pedro Caixinha’s sacking in October.
Football Insider verdict
Gerrard’s appointment would be a massive gamble for the Light Blues and while it may prove to be a good move for the 37-year-old’s future career prospects, the only thing Rangers fans care about is if it is going to be good for the Ibrox giants. Every managerial hire is a gamble – some more so than others – and although Gerrard may well turn out to be a top manager in time, the Gers need to make sure they get the appointment that is right for them rather than what might be the right move for an individual’s career.
