James Tavernier raves about Rangers summer signing impact at Ibrox
Rangers defender James Tavernier believes summer signing Daniel Candeias has helped the Gers “a lot” and given him some consistency after playing with a rotating cast of right wingers in his previous two season with the Light Blues.
Tavernier and Candeais have formed a great understanding down the right for Graeme Murty’s side and are the focal point of much of the Gers attacking play.
Tavernier has had a number of different partners on the right flank during his time at Ibrox but hasn’t had any real consistent run of games with them prior to Candeias arriving over the summer.
The right-back also believes the entire Gers defence has been “great” this season and revealed manager Graeme Murty has been working with him as a former full-back himself.
“The addition of Daniel has helped us a lot” said Tavernier, as quoted by the Gers’ official website.
“We have a great understanding, and for the previous years, the wingers I was playing with chopped and changed a little.
“But Daniel and I have been playing on the right hand side for a while now and we have a great understanding.
“He puts in a lot of miles on the pitch and works hard for the team both offensively and defensively, and as a full-back, you want the winger to come and help you, and I’ll try to help him as much as I can in an attacking sense too.
“To have that consistency always helps, but the whole back four have been great. We have worked really hard defensively, and the gaffer has helped that and worked with me too being a fellow full-back.”
Tavernier has been in great form so far this season with five goals and eight assists in 29 appearances while Candeias has five goals and seven assists in his 29 appearance since arriving from Benfica over the summer.
The 27-year-old joined Rangers from Wigan in 2015, making 123 appearances and has lifted the Scottish Championship and Scottish Challenge Cup during his time in Scotland.
Both players are expected to start when the Gers welcome Neil Lennon’s Hibernian to Ibrox in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday afternoon.
