Jermaine Jenas has boldly claimed that Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli has the potential to be one of the best players in world football.
Alli, 21, has been criticised this season for not meeting the level of performances from the previous campaign, but Jenas has moved to defend the England international, suggesting that he is just having a wobble in form.
The former MK Dons player has made 21 appearances across all competitions this term, but despite accusations of him enduring a dip in form he has still been able to contribute with seven goals and six assists.
Jenas believes that it won’t be long before Alli is back to his best, and has even gone to the point of saying he could be one of the top players on the planet.
“Can Dele be one of the best players in the world? I think he can get to that level, but players like David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, even Mesut Ozil at Arsenal have been operating at the top of the game for many years now, so you expect them to perform more consistently that a kid like Dele,” he said, as quoted by Yahoo.
“Don’t worry about Dele Alli. We can all see that he is having a bit of a confidence wobble, probably his first since he went to Tottenham, but we all need to lay off him a little bit and let him develop at a natural pace.”
Alli is no doubt a key player in the Tottenham first-team but is constantly met with calls from the fans for him to be dropped from Mauricio Pochettino’s starting XI, especially now that Erik Lamela is back to fitness.
On Wednesday, Alli was named on the bench for the first time in the Premier League this season against Brighton but he still came on for the final 16 minutes in what was a routine 2-0 win.
In other Tottenham news, Spurs have jetted out on a transfer mission to France for this midfield dynamo.
