Joe Gomes: Significant update on Newcastle deal after swap talks
Newcastle United are expected to reignite their interest in Liverpool star Joe Gomez in January, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the Magpies remain keen to sign a new centre-back in January after missing out on Marc Geuhi in the summer.
Gomez had emerged as a possible option during the window after a player-plus-cash swap deal with Anthony Gordon was floated, but nothing materialised.
Sources with knowledge of the player’s situation say the 27-year-old is expected to make a decision about his long-term future ahead of the transfer window after falling down the pecking order at Anfield.
However, the Reds are unlikely to allow the defender to leave the club in January without first bringing in a replacement – complicating the potential deal.
It is said Gomez could push for a move away from Anfield if Liverpool prove unwilling to negotiate as he looks to further his career with more regular first-team football.
Newcastle United to return with offer for Liverpool star Joe Gomez
Gomez has slipped below Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Jarell Quansah in the pecking order under Arne Slot, and is said to be reluctant to continue as a fourth-choice option.
Interest from Newcastle has been long-standing, and the Magpies are expected to make another move for his signature when the transfer window opens.
However, they will face competition from Premier League rivals for the defender, who remains highly-rated thanks to his performances when called upon.
His versatility and ability to play across the back line have also been highlighted as a key aspect of his game, allowing for further rotation at the back.
Having earned a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad in the summer, Gomez is aware he will need to play regular football to remain in international contention.

The Magpies’ inability to land Guehi from Crystal Palace in the summer left them short of options at the back, and they will return to address the area in January.
A renewed deal for Guehi also remains an option if no deal for Gomez materialised, as they continue to weigh up their options.
