John Carver delivers warning to Newcastle after PL promotion

By Danny Wright

John Carver has warned Newcastle that they must give Rafa Benitez what he wants in the summer.

The ex-Real Madrid and Liverpool boss threw his Newcastle future into question on Monday when he said he isn’t sure about what the future holds for him, despite his side securing their return to the Premier League on the same night.

Now, former Magpies interim boss Carver believes that Benitez must be financially backed by owner Mike Ashley over the summer in order to get the club up to the level of other top-flight teams.

The 52-year-old endured a tough spell in his time in charge of the north east outfit and wants to see Benitez become a success, but maintains he must be given more control over what goes on behind the scenes.

“I have to say I’d be very surprised if he walked away from it”, said Carver to talkSPORT.

“He had some control over what he wanted to do this past year and I’m sure if the football club are wise enough they’ll give him that same control next year.

“Obviously they’ll certainly need a war chest to get the squad up to standard for the Premier League, but I’m sure they will and I’m sure Rafa will be there. He’s taken to the club, he loves the club, he loves the fans and the fans love him.”

Newcastle secured their return to the Premier League on Monday night with a convincing 4-1 win over Preston.

Ayoze Perez scored once in each half as Matt Ritchie and Christian Atsu rounded off the win in style against Simon Grayson’s side, who finished the game with ten men.

The Magpies have two games to play in the Championship season and could still win the league title if they can close down a four-point gap to leaders Brighton.

Chris Hughton’s men need to win just one of their final two fixtures to prevent Newcastle from catching them at the top.
