‘Jose Mourinho will be brilliant for Newcastle – I should know after what I saw’

Jose Mourinho would be a brilliant option for Newcastle United if they decide to part ways with Eddie Howe in the near future.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson explained that he was in the manager’s press conference following Fenerbahce v Man United at insisted he was on “brilliant” form.

It was then that Mourinho explained: “The best thing I have to do is when I leave Fener is that I go to a club that doesn’t play in UEFA competition. So a club at the bottom in England who needs a coach in two years, I’m ready to go.

Robinson described the outburst as “box-office”, but also explained that there was clear intention behind the manager’s claims.

It was said that the boss’ intention to return to the Premier League has been made clear, with Newcastle his best option regardless of what Howe has done for them.

He also insisted the bottom clubs in England would struggle to attract Mourinho, but he would also struggle to take over at a top side, leaving the Magpies as the best option.

Jose Mourinho tipped to take Newcastle United job

Mourinho has been away from England since his departure from the Tottenham job in 2021, but has been hinting at a potential return.

Everton were also linked with the boss due to his connection with prospective new owner Dan Friedkin, but Robinson has insisted that Newcastle is his only real option and the job he will be targeting if Howe eventually leaves his role.

We can’t talk about the Newcastle job while Eddie Howe’s still there,” he told Football Insider.

“When you look at what Howe’s done for the club, avoiding relegation, keeping them in the Premier League and taking them to where they are now.

“It’s very unfair to talk about another manager possibly taking his job.

“But, actually, when you look at Mourinho coming back to the Premier League, where else is he going to go?

“I was at the Man United v Fenerbahce game and I sat in the press conference, he was brilliant, it was literally box-office.

“That was when he said he doesn’t want to manage a club that plays in this competition, he just throws these lines out and the press bite.

“You can see what he wants, and if he gets that move back to the Premier League, you have to look at where he would go.

Wolves

“He’s not going to Man City, not going to Liverpool, not going to Arsenal, not going back to Chelsea or Tottenham, so the opportunities are few and far between.

“He won’t go to one of the bottom half clubs, I can’t ever imagine him managing the likes of Crystal Palace or Nottingham Forest.

“Wherever you look, Newcastle is the only one with their ownership, status, and attention, where you could see Mourinho fitting in.”
