Nottingham Forest will have to begin selling players on for profit in order to improve their financial situation.

That is according to former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, after Nottingham Forest recorded a £71million loss in their 2024-25 financial accounts.

The Tricky Trees spent over £180m last summer as they tried to maintain their position in the top half of the Premier League table after qualifying for Europe for the first time in 30 years.

Following three managerial departures, Vitor Pereira’s side face the risk of losing revenue and dropping down to the Championship, with just three points currently separating Nottingham Forest and the Premier League relegation zone.

Owner Evangelos Marinakis has invested heavily into Nottingham Forest, but player sales could be on the cards at the City Ground this summer.

Nottingham Forest ‘have to make an adjustment’ after financial figures released

Everton’s former chief Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – is not concerned about Nottingham Forest’s £71m loss, but states that selling players needs to be on the agenda.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness believes this season can be regarded as a one-off for the club.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Over the three year period, they’ll have to make an adjustment and start getting back onto player trading this year and get that number down.

“But I’m not unduly concerned. And I think they’ll understand that they tried this season. They spent quite a lot on players themselves and didn’t sell many.

“And that was probably all an intention to try and keep the club doing as well as it had done the season before. It hasn’t quite worked. So it’s time to reshuffle.

“They’ve had four managers as well, don’t forget. Expensive stuff to do. So I think we will have to look at this as a one-off season. But it’s not irrecoverable is what I’m saying, and it can be fixed and adjusted, but it’s going to take some player sales next summer and this summer.”

Who could be sold at Nottingham Forest this summer?

Transfer plans at the City Ground will be dictated by the clubs end to the season and whether they remain in the Premier League.

There is expected to be interest in Murillo, Morgan Gibbs-White and Elliot Anderson throughout the summer, and the club could make a healthy profit if they were to sell all three stars.

Stefan Borson told Football Insider that Manchester City could already be in talks with Anderson, and they could agree a deal in principle to sign the midfielder next month.

In attack, Nottingham Forest have had concerns throughout the season on the goalscoring return of Igor Jesus, and the Brazilian could leave the club after just a season in English football.
