Leeds boss Monk makes huge statement about Newcastle ahead of showdown

By Dominic Toner

Leeds manager Garry Monk has made the huge statement that upcoming opponents Newcastle have an “exceptional team” ahead of their Championship encounter.

The Whites travel to St James’ Park on Friday night for a league match and both teams are in the race for promotion this season.

The Yorkshire giants are fifth-placed in the table and are looking to seal a spot in the play-offs.

Meanwhile, Rafael Benitez’s Newcastle are second and look on course to secure automatic promotion.

Monk has given the Magpies huge praise ahead of the game and feels that they are one of the best teams in the Championship, despite his Leeds side desperate for the three points when they clash.

“Newcastle are one of the best sides in this league, they have an exceptional team. Their objective from the start of the season was to secure an automatic promotion spot and they look course for that,” Monk said, as cited by the club’s official Twitter account.

Leeds suffered a 2-0 home defeat to Newcastle in the previous meeting this season and their star striker Dwight Gayle grabbed both goals.

However, the 22-goal forward is expected to be absent on Friday through injury and that will be a welcomed boost to the Whites defence.

Monk’s side will be looking to build on the 3-0 win over Preston in their last game, while Newcastle look to respond from a 2-1 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday.
