Leeds Exclusive: Phillips drops Roberts verdict amid Hay's Rodrigo & Raphinha updates

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa was right to rebuff transfer interest in Tyler Roberts last month, according to Kevin Phillips.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former England international said the 22-year-old could be set for a “little run of games” in the side if injuries continue to mount up at Elland Road.

Whites attackers Rodrigo and Raphinha both suffered injuries in the 3-1 win at Leicester City on Sunday, while Ian Poveda limped off for the Under-23s on Monday.

Writing in The Athletic, journalist Phil Hay said “Rodrigo will miss out tonight” and Raphinha is also unlikely to start.

The club are still awaiting to learn the extent of the injuries ahead of their Premier League fixture against Everton but if lengthy, Roberts could be called into the starting eleven.

Football Insider revealed that Roberts was the subject of interest from Derby County, Sheffield Wednesday, Cardiff City, Preston North End and Bournemouth last month.

But Bielsa made it clear that the forward was part of his plans for the remainder of the season.

Phillips believes Leeds were right to keep hold of the Wales international.

“For the rest of this season, staying at Leeds United might be best for him,” he told Football Insider.

“He will be learning an awful lot working with Bielsa on a daily basis. There are some great players there as well.

“You never know, he might get a good spell of game time over the next few weeks. There has been a lot of emphasis on Bamford and Rodrigo but with injuries he may get a little run of games.

“Keeping him until the end of the season was probably the right thing to do. His development can be reassessed in the summer.”
