Tom Pearce was handed his senior debut for Leeds on Saturday as they hosted Sheffield Wednesday at Elland Road – and fans were in two minds about how he got on.
Paul Heckingbottom is playing for next season now and assessing some of the youth in his squad, after already successfully blooding Bailey Peacock-Farrell in the last few games.
The 19-year-old left-back has impressed for the Under-23s recently and got his chance to shine for the first team today, in what turned out to be a pretty drab encounter.
In a game of few chances, Leeds probably should have taken the three points, but as it was Sheffield Wednesday took the lead in the second half.
Substitute Jay-Roy Grot popped up in the 87th minute to score his first goal for Leeds but his side couldn’t hold on and conceded a calamitous goal at the death.
Pearce was off by that point and he won’t have done his chances of more first-team football any harm today.
However, not all fans thought he did well, with one calling his performance “awful” and “stressful”.
However, another said he was “impressed” in as “solid a debut as you can get”.
Here are the best reactions from Leeds fans to the display from Pearce:
Seeing the name ‘Pearce’ followed by words like ‘defensive mishap’ is like the warm embrace of an old, old friend. #lufc
