Phil Hay has revealed that he has named Newcastle trio Ciaran Clark, Jonjo Shelvey and Chris Gayle in his Championship Team of the Year.

Yorkshire Evening Post reporter Hay, who covers promotion-chasers Leeds full time, stated on his personal Twitter account that his team excluded players from Garry Monk’s side.

The Magpies currently top the table with Rafa Benitez on course to guide his team to an instant return back to the Premier League.

It is almost certain that a number of the Spaniard’s players will feature in the TOTY, with striker Gayle arguably the most obvious choice for selection.

The club’s summer signing has scored 21 goals in 27 league games and reporter Hay named him in a 4-3-3 formation.

Striker Chris Wood is likely to be in serious contention to lead the line when the official TOTY is announced at the end of the campaign.

The New Zealand international is currently the top scorer in the second division with 22 goals and he will be looking to add to that tally with nine games of the season remaining.

Wood’s goals have been crucial to his side picking up valuable points this term. This was proven during the 1-0 home win against promotion rivals Sheffield Wednesday in February.

Furthermore, defender Pontus Jansson has been another player who has provided consistency and solidity at the back for Monk.
