Leeds told to axe three stars v Burnley today after team news update - Whelan

Noel Whelan has urged Marcelo Bielsa to axe three players from the Leeds United starting XI against Burnley.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested Robin Koch, Mateusz Klich and Tyler Roberts should make way for Kalvin Phillips, Rodrigo and Raphinha.

As confirmed at Marcelo Bielsa’s pre-match press conference, Phillips, Rodrigo and Raphinha are all fit and in contention to start at Turf Moor.

The trio all came off the bench to play in last weekend’s 3-1 win over Tottenham.

Raphinha and Rodrigo linked up for the Whites’ final goal against the north Londoners.

Whelan has already tipped Bielsa to drop Mateusz Klich to bring the Brazilian winger back into the side.

He suggested Koch and Roberts should join the Poland international on the bench.

Whelan told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge: If you’re looking to play the best and strongest squad you’ve got then you’ve got to turn to the bench from last week. You bring Kalvin and Raphinha back into the mix.

“By far is Kalvin one of the best midfielders in the Premier League in that role. Robin Koch has come on leaps and bounds. I think it would be very disappointing for Robin Koch because he’s done really, really well.

“You look at the two people who came on and set the goal up. Raphinha, intelligent play again and an emphatic finish, those kind of finishes are never easy, from Rodrigo. If anyone needed a goal to get his confidence and his season going again, it was Rodrigo.

“There could be a shift in momentum there as well with Rodrigo and Tyler Roberts. You could just say: ‘Okay Tyler, we’ve given you your chance.’

“Now it’s time for the star man to get back in the side and carry on where he finished last week with the goal.”

Roberts has been a mainstay recently thanks to Rodrigo’s absence, with 12 successive starts under his belt.

However, he has not scored and has contributed just one assist during his spell in the side.
