Leicester City owner shares new PSR fear ahead of points deduction announcement
Leicester City have faced various issues complying with the profit and sustainability rules (PSR) in recent years.
Leicester were initially charged with a spending breach in March 2024 after reporting losses of £90million for 2022-23, with top-flight sides only permitted to lose £105m over a rolling three-year period.
It was later revealed the Foxes would not face any punishment for their 2022-23 breach after exploiting a loophole in the rules.
However, Leicester were charged last May with an alleged breach of the EFL’s financial rules in their promotion-winning campaign back to the Premier League in 2023-24.
Finance expert Stefan Borson told Football Insider Leicester are likely to receive a six-point deduction after their case was heard in November.
Leicester owner details PSR ‘worry’ in rare interview
There has been plenty of change at the King Power Stadium in recent months.
Susan Whelan stepped down as Leicester’s chief executive in October after spending 15 years with the club.
Foxes owner and chairman Aiyawatt ‘Top’ Srivaddhanaprabha is currently operating as interim CEO while a replacement is found.
Khun Aiyawatt has now spoken out about the issues currently facing the East Midlands side in his first interview since his father, Vichai, was killed in a helicopter crash outside the King Power in 2018.
Speaking to Sky Sports on Tuesday (27 January), the Thai businessman shared his concerns around Leicester’s outstanding PSR hearing.
“I am worried too,” he said. “Every year we try to comply with PSR. The only one we don’t know what it is, is the year we get relegated. And when we didn’t plan for that, it hit us hard.
“But the rest of the season we are compliant, and I am sure a club like Leicester, everybody knows our story, I know we are trying hard to comply. I cannot say much, but let’s wait for a decision, and the quicker is the better for all.”
Leicester are not the only club to have faced issues complying with the PSR rules over the past few years.
Everton were deducted eight points in the 2023-24 season following two separate breaches, while Nottingham Forest were handed a four-point penalty in the same campaign.
Could Leicester have breached the PSR rules again last season?
It currently remains unclear whether Leicester were compliant with the PSR rules for last season, where they were once again relegated to the Championship.
The i Paper reported on 13 January if a breach was committed by any of the teams in question, it would be announced on 14 January.
The newspaper said the Premier League was expected to declare all 20 clubs compliant for the first time in three seasons, but a statement is yet to be made either way.
Alongside their off-field issues, the Foxes are looking for a new manager after sacking Marti Cifuentes on Sunday (25 January).
Russell Martin is among the candidates to replace Cifuentes after being relieved of his duties by Rangers in October.
Leicester currently sit 14th in the Championship table following their inconsistent form this season.
