Daniel Levy is one of the shrewdest men in the cut-throat world of football transfers.
Spurs fans might complain that he takes too long before doing his business and that he doesn’t dig deep enough into his wallet, but he knows what players are worth.
His real skill is then making sure that he gets them for much less then their market value.
His next cut-price target is Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish.
According to Sky Sports, he’s put in a £15million bid for Aston Villa’s star player after scouting him extensively last season.
From those scouting missions he’ll already know how good Grealish is, and how good he could possibly become.
The 22-year-old has been at Villa for his entire professional career, bar one loan stint at Notts County in 2013.
He would have loved to have gone up to the Premier League with them this season but, despite his best efforts, they lost in the play-off finals to Fulham, and now they’re reportedly in heavy financial difficulties.
Despite claims they might be able to hold onto Grealish, it seems far more likely that he’ll go this summer and Levy has made sure Tottenham are first in line.
Cheslea, Fulham and Leicester are also keen on the player though, so Levy will have to convince Grealish that he’s best served at the new Tottenham stadium.
That shouldn’t be hard to do.
Chelsea have a terrible record with young players and if Grealish has any sense he should run a mile from any overtures from West London.
Tottenham would seem like the perfect team for him – a core of top English players and a manager who is at the top of his game and perfect at working with talented youngsters.
Aston Villa want £40million but they’re not going to get it.
If Levy can land Grealish for around £20million, even if he has to loan him back to Villa for a season, he would be pulling off a masterstroke, that could go down as one of his best deals of all time.
And there’s a lot of competition there.
